Quicktips:
- It’s cheaper to buy groceries and household products at supermarkets than 24 hr convenience stores such as 7-11.
- Fruit and vegetable markets are cheaper and better quality than supermarkets for fresh produce.
- Supermarkets have longer trading hours.
- Supermarkets have delivery if needed.
- There are supermarkets that specialised in end runs, such as NQR (Not Quite Right).
- If you go to the market in the last hour, most stallholders heavily discount their produce to get rid of it. You may not get the unblemished ones, but you could get a bargain (e.g. a whole tray of tomatoes for $5 or potatoes at 80c/kilo).
- Go to an op-shop and get a trolley/jeep, it will save your arms from carrying the load!
- Use calico bags and bring along old plastic bags for wet vegetables.
- Organise a co-operative with your friends and neighbours – buy in bulk and then split the cost. This way you can stretch your money further.
